2014 Hot Spots

Four vacations trendy travelers are booking this year

If you pride yourself in being at the forefront of all the latest trends, then your vacations should be no different. After all, don’t you want to say you’ve “been there and done that” before everyone else?

To help travelers pinpoint potential trips next year, full-service travel agency AAA is forecasting the top four travel trends and hot spots for 2014, in no particular order:

Panama Canal. Travel to Latin America increased 8.3 percent in 2013, according to the International Air Transport Association. AAA projects this trend will continue in 2014 as August marks the 100th anniversary of the completion of the canal. Centennial celebrations, including historical and cultural exhibitions hosted by the Panama Canal Authority, will be a draw for travelers across the globe. In addition to lush rainforests, Panama offers rich culture including Indian and artisan villages, and 16th century historic sites.

Italy. This boot-shaped peninsula will continue to be a European hot spot as food and wine trips grow in popularity. The country offers an abundant history, rich in culture, architecture, and artistic flavor. With so much to see and do in Italy, specialized trips and tours are becoming more common. For example, AAA is giving away a dream vacation to the Chianti region of Tuscany that includes Italian cooking classes and winery tours.

Rail travel. Another trend picking up steam is rail travel, because the transportation becomes part of the experience. You can sit back and take in the scenery as a guide discusses the sights. With different ranges of classes and amenities from each carrier, there is something for every budget. Popular North American destinations include the Grand Canyon and Verde Valley Railroad right here in Arizona, as well as the Canadian Rockies and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad in Alaska. Abroad, there are several inner-city rail trips in Europe and a transcontinental line in Australia.

Cruising. Because of its intimate settings and unique destinations, river cruising in particular will continue to gain momentum in Europe and in the United States on the Mississippi and the Columbia Snake rivers. Major cruise lines, including Princess Cruises, also will introduce new ships this year, which tend to increase interest among travelers.
