Car Renters’ Rules

Eight things to keep in mind when renting a vehicle

If your travel plans include renting a car, here are a few things to know before you go:
1. Make a reservation as far in advance as possible. As availability decreases, rates may increase.
2. Consider the prepayment option, which can grant mean discounts.

3. Ask about cancellation rules. Some companies charge a cancellation fee if you used a credit card to guarantee the reservation.
4. Follow the guidelines of your reservation. Contact the rental company when your travel plans change to determine if you will be charged for a partial or full day if you return the car late, or if you will be charged the full rental time if you return the car early.
5. Check your insurance coverage. Check your personal auto insurance policy to make sure you are covered when renting a car, or check for coverage provided with your credit card. If already covered, there’s no need to accept the loss-damage waiver.
6. Check the car carefully for body damage, scratches, and other cosmetic defects. Have the attendant record any damage on the rental agreement before you leave the lot.
7. Read the agreement. Read the items you are asked to initial on the rental agreement to ensure they are accurate.
8. Remember your member savings.
