Do You Have "Miles" You Can't Use?

BYStaff
A 2011 study by Colloquy, a publishing, research, and education group, showed more than $16 billion worth of rewards points and miles expire unused each year. These rewards points can be valuable — if not to you, then to someone else.

If you’re looking for a quick way to give back, consider donating your miles to a charitable organization like Make-a-Wish Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, or the Red Cross. Chances are, your favorite charity could benefit from your good fortune, and it won’t cost you a dime.

Loyalty programs differ, so browse the website or ask an online representative. Find out if the company supports certain charities, if there’s a minimum contribution amount required, if you can get a tax receipt, and if your chosen charity can use the points as they wish. Remember, the safest and most reliable way to go about this is through the loyalty program itself, as opposed to a third-party site.
