Driving to Mexico?

Your U.S. auto policy won’t cover you south of the border

BYStaff
Mexico’s affordability and proximity, particularly Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), continue to make it a holiday hot spot and popular drive destination for Arizonans.

Before hitting the road, ensure you’re adequately covered when heading south of the border. Here are five things AAA wants you to be aware of before your next driving trip to Mexico:

1. U.S. automobile insurance is not valid in Mexico.
2. Under Mexican law, an automobile accident is a criminal offense.
3. Should an accident occur, you are presumed guilty until proven innocent.
4. A Mexico auto insurance policy is the only form of insurance the authorities will accept as evidence of financial responsibility.
5. If you can’t provide a Mexico auto insurance policy, you could be arrested and jailed.

AAA offers members and nonmembers Mexico auto insurance that can be purchased online for car, motorcycle, RV, trailer, and boats in tow. Service is available for Arizona residents only.
