Feast of Food Network Flavor

8 Arizona restaurants with small screen fame

BYAshley M. Biggers
More than two-dozen Phoenix, Tucson, and Flagstaff dining establishments have earned recognition on TV shows such as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives; The Best Thing I Ever Ate; $40 A Day with Rachel Ray; and Food Nation with Bobby Flay. Here’s a handful of the Copper State's restaurants that have us ordering seconds.
The B Line restaurant, Tucson
Rachael Ray indulged in a slice of berry-patch pie (now called the Four-Berry Pie) at this casual, bistro-style eatery during an episode of $40 a Day. Its famous desserts may have brought the TV host in the door, but you’ll find numerous homey dishes on the wide-ranging menu that includes sandwiches, pasta, and burritos. The restaurant is a perennial award-winner for Best Casual Dining in local readers’ polls.
Brandy’s Restaurant and Bakery, Flagstaff
With its focus on comfort foods, this restaurant had Guy Fieri drooling for its beef stew on a 2009 episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The restaurant is also popular for its Swedish oat and original pancakes, which are also available in mix form in the restaurant’s storefront shop. You may not even make it past the bakery case, which is full of softball-size cinnamon rolls and family-size brownies.
The Coffee Shop, Gilbert
Sisters Jessica and Jenna Flowers competed on Cupcake Wars in 2010, vying to serve their dessert at an anniversary party for another popular TV show, Ace of Cakes. The shop serves its winning cupcake, Coffee and Cigarettes, along with other flavors such as horchata (a traditional Spanish drink made of nuts), PB&J, and watermelon.
Giuseppe’s on 28th, Phoenix
This restaurant earned Guy Fiere’s smile of approval on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. He sampled the bruschetta, osso bucco, and several pastas from this pretense-free eatery that any Italian grandmother would be proud to call her own.
Joe’s Farm Grill, Gilbert
Get field-to-fork versions of American classics (think: barbecue ribs and pulled pork) at this stand known for its American favorites. Guy Fieri, from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, tucked into the fontina burger, ahi tuna sandwich, grilled wedge salad, and barbecue chicken pizza during his visit. Fieri was lucky enough to skip to the front of the lengthy line; if you’re visiting this popular eatery, be prepared to wait.
Matt’s Big Breakfast, Phoenix
Is this popular eatery worthy of its acclaim as the city’s top breakfast spot? If you ask the hosts of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and The Best Thing I Ever Ate, the answer is "yes." Try the Chop & Chick, one of the featured dishes on the shows, which has two eggs and a skillet-seared Iowa pork rib chop, or the restaurant’s popular made-from-scratch waffles.
Teresa’s Mosaic Café, Tucson
Mother-son duo Teresa and David Matias brought their A-game to Throwdown With Bobby Flay, challenging the famed chef to top their legendary huevos rancheros. The Matias family uses homemade tortillas and fire-roasted green chilies in all their dishes, including their star-powered chilaquiles.
Zinburger, Phoenix and Tucson
Meat and Potatoes host Rahm Fama didn’t just find gourmet burgers and fine wine at this upscale joint, he chowed down on decadent double-truffle fries. Polish off your meal with a salted caramel milkshake, and you’ll reach a whole new level of dining Zen.
