Learn some tricks to feeling your best while traveling

You’ve planned your dream vacation — the last thing you want is to feel less than your best. AAA Travel professional Wendy Vanhouten from the Sun City West office provides tips to ensure you stay healthy before, during, and after your trip.

How can I prepare to meet any health challenges while I’m away?
• Plan ahead. Travel with antacid, medicines to treat gastric distress, antihistamine, ibuprofen or acetaminophen, throat lozenges, and insect repellant.
• Remember disinfecting wipes. They can be especially useful to clean hotel remotes and phones.
• Carry your medications in their original bottles and make a list of your prescriptions and dosages. Also leave a list with someone at home.
• Make sure you’re current on basic vaccinations, including tetanus.

Do you have any advice for staying well while traveling, especially when flying?
• Drink plenty of water. This keeps you from getting dehydrated and forces you to get up and move around the plane, which improves circulation.
• If you’re prone to motion sickness, pack pills so you can enjoy your trip.

At my destination, how can I stay healthy?
• Wash your hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer.
• When changing to a higher altitude, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol for the first day.
• Consume only freshly cooked food and avoid street carts.
• Drink bottled water. Some people’s systems are sensitive to different water even from state to state.
