How to Find the Right Driving School for Your Teen

With most Arizona high schools no longer offering driver education classes, there are fewer educational options for teens working to earn their driver's licenses. And with only one AAA Approved driving school in Arizona, finding a driving school for your teen can be daunting. As a safety advocate, AAA offers five tips on choosing a driving school.
1. Don’t rely solely on websites: It’s not too difficult to create a slick-looking website. After you look online, visit your top two or three driving school choices before making a decision.
2. Car check: While visiting the school, check out the vehicles that are used to teach behind-the-wheel skills. A brand-new car isn’t necessary, but a dilapidated jalopy isn’t safe.
3. Balance is key: Make sure the school is offering a fairly even curriculum of hours in the classroom and behind the wheel. You don’t want too much of one or the other.
4. Check certification: Ask if the school is certified by the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADSTEA). Schools must meet certain standards to become certified.
5. Reference check: Ask for references from the school. Sure, the school only will provide positive references, but the questions you ask should tell you if that school is appropriate for your teen.
