Stay Fit for Driving

BYStaff
According to a study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, older adults with a history of falling are 40 percent more likely to be involved in motor vehicle crashes.

Falls can increase crash risk because the individual may suffer from a loss of functional ability from the fall, which can make it difficult for drivers to steer or brake to avoid a crash. Also, the fear of falling again can lead to decreased physical activity, which can weaken driving skills.

Addressing the health issues that led to the fall, such as lower body weakness, poor balance, slow reaction time, certain medications, dizziness, or vision problems, can help strengthen functional ability and lower the risk for crashing or experiencing another fall in the future.
