Scoop up your family and head to these 6 Arizona ice cream shops for locally made treats

BYAshley M. Biggers
During Arizona’s sweltering summer, there are few better ways to cool off than with freshly made ice cream. Whether you’re in search of an after-dinner treat or on a weekend quest for a decadent dessert, here are six shops that will have your family screaming for ice cream.

Apple Annie’s Orchard, Wilcox
Visiting Apple Annie’s Orchard is a family tradition for many Arizonans. Opened in 1986, the farm grows peaches, apples, pears, pumpkins, and several types of vegetables. But it’s the crops that brings sweet, natural taste to the farm's ice cream flavors, which include peach with peach topping, apple with apple crumb topping, and creamy pumpkin. Previously only available during seasonal harvests, in May 2013, Apple Annie’s opened an off-site farm store that now serves the Arizona-made treats year-round.

Hub Restaurant and Ice Creamery, Tucson
Whether in its entrees or ice creams, Hub serves classic American comfort foods with an elevated twist. Can’t get enough of the bacon craze? Order a scoop of bacon Scotch ice cream, one of the seasonal flavors that rotates through the Hub's menu of more than 20 offerings. Irene Cohen, the restaurant’s ice cream maven, invents and makes all the varieties on site, including kid-friendly creations such as birthday cake, which includes cake-batter flavor and sprinkles. Although Hub is a full-service restaurant, you can stop in any time for a single cone — or perhaps a sundae sprinkled with hot fudge and potato chips.

Paletas Betty, Chandler and Tempe
These sweet little shops specialize in Mexican fruit and cream popsicles. Proprietor Betty Alatorre makes the refreshing pops using local produce, hand-ground spices, and other simple ingredients. Popular pops range from the classic fresa con crema (strawberries with cream) to zesty limón amarillo, and seasonal tastes such as key lime pie with graham cracker sprinkles. The family pooch can have a tasty treat, too, with perroleta, daily ice cream offerings for dogs.

Sweet Republic, Scottsdale
This candy-colored Scottsdale shop is a comfy spot to kick back with a handmade waffle cone filled with artisanal ice cream. Kids will love the made-on-the-spot ice cream sandwiches with chocolate chip cookies and the ice cream of their choice. Adults in the bunch will enjoy Sweet Republic’s homemade sophisticated flavors, such as honey blue cheese (you’ll like this only if you really love the tangy cheese) and Guinness chocolate.

Tortilla Flat General Store and Ice Cream Shop, Tortilla Flat
Tortilla Flat may be small — the Old West town 50 miles east of Phoenix has a population of six — but its ice cream shop serves big flavors. Its signature scoop is prickly pear gelato, an original recipe made in Arizona and served since the ’80s. The ice cream has a mild, berry taste, and is the perfect complement to a Sunday drive to Tortilla Flat. Established in 1904, the town is also home to a restaurant known for its hearty bowls of chili stew. So, whether you need to cool off from the hot summer day or your spicy lunch, enjoy a serving of this only-in-Arizona confection.

Udder Delights, Gilbert
Offering a true farm-to-feast experience, this Gilbert ice cream shop is located on Superstition Farm. Make a day of it with your family on the “Cows to Cone Tour,” where you’ll witness the milking process and see how the farm transforms the milk into ice cream, butter, and cheese. Ice cream enthusiasts can even make their own desserts by selecting unfrozen mix, putting it into an ice cream ball, and churning it until it's cone ready. You can also just stop in for a cone at Mooster’s MOO-tique where more than 20 flavors are served daily, ranging from classic vanilla to palate puzzlers such as dill pickle and red-hot banana.
