Top 10 Maintenance Reminders

Keep your car in check with these tips

Preventive car care is the best way to protect your safety and the investment made in your vehicle. Here is AAA’s top 10 maintenance checklist — and tips to help you maintain a smooth ride.
1. Tire pressure: Check tire pressure monthly when the tire is cold.
2. Engine air filter: Change your air filter every 6 months or 7,500 miles.
3. Battery cables and clamps: Have cables, clamps, and terminals inspected at every oil change for signs of corrosion or indications of electrical problems.
4. Antifreeze/coolant protection: Check coolant at every oil change, and make sure it’s above the “cold” level marking.
5. Brakes and brake fluid: At every oil change, have your vehicle checked for low brake fluid. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing the brake fluid about every two years to flush moisture and contaminants from the system.
6. Windshield washer fluid: Check monthly, and even more often, if you use the washers frequently.
7. Windshield wiper blades: Check at every oil change or if you notice they are not cleaning the glass properly in one swipe. The life of a rubber insert typically is 6 to 12 months.
8. Engine oil: Change your engine’s oil and oil filter at the manufacturer’s specified intervals.

9. Tire tread: Insert a penny upside down into a tire groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head at any point, replace the tire.

10. Drive belt tensioner: The condition and tension of the drive belt should be checked at every oil change. To prevent being stranded by a broken accessory drive belt, have your car’s belts replaced every 4 years or 60,000 miles.
Keeping these tips in mind will improve fuel economy and can protect you from budget-busting repair bills later. A car that is in top working condition is much safer to drive.
