Stay On Track

Keep your budget in check, no matter how you choose to travel

BYStaff
Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, costs can add up. Keep more money in your hands with these travel budgeting tips.

Saving in the Sky
Limit checked bags. Most airlines charge fees upwards of $25 for checked bags each way, which can equate to a price tag of $200 – $400 for a family of four. Consolidate bags among your family or traveling party to reduce potential baggage fees. Check with your airline for limitations on size and weight to ensure you don’t incur additional costs for oversized or overweight luggage.

Saving on the Road
Budget accordingly. While gas prices are about 24 percent lower compared to last year, filling up quickly can become a budget buster. Use tools such as the AAA TripTik® Travel Planner, AAA Mobile® app, and Fuel Cost Calculator to help budget in advance and locate the cheapest fuel while on the road.

Prep your vehicle. Ensuring tires are properly inflated can improve fuel economy by as much as 3 percent. This translates to fuel savings of up to 7 cents per gallon, according to the Department of Energy.

Pack meals. One of the conveniences to a road trip is that there are no restrictions on what or how much you can bring along. Packing a cooler with premade meals can help cut back on on-the-road dining costs.

Be Frugal
Take advantage of freebies. Many hotels offer a complimentary breakfast or allow kids to eat free with a paid adult meal. By taking advantage of $30 – 40 in free meal costs per day, a family of four can save $90 –$120 over a three-day weekend, or $210 – $280 over the course of a week.

Ask for discounts wherever you go. AAA members, for example, receive special member pricing at many hotels, tourist attractions, and other retail partners. A complete list of savings, including discounted attraction tickets, can be found on AAA Discounts. Smartphone users can download the free AAA app, which uses GPS to help travelers find discounts at more than 100,000 partners.
